1 Tim 4:8 – “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

Soul training exercises or spiritual disciplines are the means that help train our soul to remain sensitive to God and open to His transforming work. They help us become awake and stay awake to God. Pressing into God through soul training exercises helps us realise that what we earn, accumulate or achieve means nothing compared to what we become and who we are.

Soul training exercises assist us cultivate the life of Christ outside the pressure, business and chaos of everyday life. They help fill us with God’s spirit so that when we are under pressure in a difficult situation, what comes out of us reflects our new nature not our old nature. Thus, soul training exercises help train our souls “off the spot” so that when we are “on the spot” we are more likely to respond in a Christ like way. They help us renew our mind and be filled by the Spirit of Christ in the difficulty and hardship of this broken world. Soul training is not so much about “arriving” at the final destination but cultivating the life of Christ along the journey. Helping train ourselves to become the kinds of people who experience the abundant life promised by God in Jesus Christ. There are many different soul training exercises discussed in the bible and Christian literature generally. Some of these can be found here SOUL TRAINING DISCIPLINES
